    On the Duality between the Heterotic String and F-Theory in 8 Dimensions

    In this note we compare the moduli spaces of the heterotic string compactified on a two-torus and F-Theory compactified on an elliptic K3 surface for the case of an unbroken E8 x E8 gauge group. The explicit map relating the deformation parameters alpha and beta of the F-Theory K3 surface to the moduli T and U of the heterotic torus is found using the close relationship between the K3 discriminant and the discriminant of the Calabi-Yau-threefold X(1,1,2,8,12)[24] in the limit of a large base P1.Comment: 10 pages, LaTe

    ECoG high gamma activity reveals distinct cortical representations of lyrics passages, harmonic and timbre-related changes in a rock song

    Listening to music moves our minds and moods, stirring interest in its neural underpinnings. A multitude of compositional features drives the appeal of natural music. How such original music, where a composer's opus is not manipulated for experimental purposes, engages a listener's brain has not been studied until recently. Here, we report an in-depth analysis of two electrocorticographic (ECoG) data sets obtained over the left hemisphere in ten patients during presentation of either a rock song or a read-out narrative. First, the time courses of five acoustic features (intensity, presence/absence of vocals with lyrics, spectral centroid, harmonic change, and pulse clarity) were extracted from the audio tracks and found to be correlated with each other to varying degrees. In a second step, we uncovered the specific impact of each musical feature on ECoG high-gamma power (70–170 Hz) by calculating partial correlations to remove the influence of the other four features. In the music condition, the onset and offset of vocal lyrics in ongoing instrumental music was consistently identified within the group as the dominant driver for ECoG high-gamma power changes over temporal auditory areas, while concurrently subject-individual activation spots were identified for sound intensity, timbral, and harmonic features. The distinct cortical activations to vocal speech-related content embedded in instrumental music directly demonstrate that song integrated in instrumental music represents a distinct dimension in complex music. In contrast, in the speech condition, the full sound envelope was reflected in the high gamma response rather than the onset or offset of the vocal lyrics. This demonstrates how the contributions of stimulus features that modulate the brain response differ across the two examples of a full-length natural stimulus, which suggests a context-dependent feature selection in the processing of complex auditory stimuli

    Unsupervised classification of operator workload from brain signals

    Objective. In this study we aimed for the classification of operator workload as it is expected in many real-life workplace environments. We explored brain-signal based workload predictors that differ with respect to the level of label information required for training, including entirely unsupervised approaches. Approach. Subjects executed a task on a touch screen that required continuous effort of visual and motor processing with alternating difficulty. We first employed classical approaches for workload state classification that operate on the sensor space of EEG and compared those to the performance of three state-of-the-art spatial filtering methods: common spatial patterns (CSPs) analysis, which requires binary label information; source power co-modulation (SPoC) analysis, which uses the subjects' error rate as a target function; and canonical SPoC (cSPoC) analysis, which solely makes use of cross-frequency power correlations induced by different states of workload and thus represents an unsupervised approach. Finally, we investigated the effects of fusing brain signals and peripheral physiological measures (PPMs) and examined the added value for improving classification performance. Main results. Mean classification accuracies of 94%, 92% and 82% were achieved with CSP, SPoC, cSPoC, respectively. These methods outperformed the approaches that did not use spatial filtering and they extracted physiologically plausible components. The performance of the unsupervised cSPoC is significantly increased by augmenting it with PPM features. Significance. Our analyses ensured that the signal sources used for classification were of cortical origin and not contaminated with artifacts.     BPS Spectra and Non--Perturbative Couplings in N=2,4 Supersymmetric String Theories

    We study the BPS spectrum in D=4,N=4D=4, N=4 heterotic string compactifications, with some emphasis on intermediate N=4N=4 BPS states. These intermediate states, which can become short in N=2N=2 compactifications, are crucial for establishing an STS-T exchange symmetry in N=2N=2 compactifications. We discuss the implications of a possible STS-T exchange symmetry for the N=2N=2 BPS spectrum. Then we present the exact result for the 1-loop corrections to gravitational couplings in one of the heterotic N=2N=2 models recently discussed by Harvey and Moore. We conjecture this model to have an STS-T exchange symmetry. This exchange symmetry can then be used to evaluate non-perturbative corrections to gravitational couplings in some of the non-perturbative regions (chambers) in this particular model and also in other heterotic models.Comment: 44 pages, LaTeX.     Modular Symmetries of N=2 Black Holes

    We discuss the transformation properties of classical extremal N=2 black hole solutions in S-T-U like models under S and T duality. Using invariants of (subgroups of) the triality group, which is the symmetry group of the classical BPS mass formula, the transformation properties of the moduli on the event horizon and of the entropy under these transformations become manifest.     Assessing Drivers’ Vigilance State During Monotonous Driving

    The differential effects of three hours of monotonous daytime driving on subjective (sleepiness, inattention, monotony), performance (choice reaction time), and physiological (EEG alpha power, P300-amplitude, heart rate) vigilance measures were examined. A linear degradation of drivers’ subjective state, mean long reaction times (as opposed to short ones), P300-amplitude and parietal alpha power with time spent on the highway was identified. An improvement of the subjective measures towards the end of the driving task was not accompanied by any improvement in performance or physiological measures. This dissociation of self-assessment and objective vigilance measures has important implications for the design of modern driver assistant systems that aim to adapt to the driver’s state

    Perturbative Couplings and Modular Forms in N=2 String Models with a Wilson Line

    We consider a class of four parameter D=4, N=2 string models, namely heterotic strings compactified on K3 times T2 together with their dual type II partners on Calabi-Yau three-folds. With the help of generalized modular forms (such as Siegel and Jacobi forms), we compute the perturbative prepotential and the perturbative Wilsonian gravitational coupling F1 for each of the models in this class. We check heterotic/type II duality for one of the models by relating the modular forms in the heterotic description to the known instanton numbers in the type II description.
